Bulletin

Issue 32is now ready!!

Over the last few years IAPS has sought to expand its activities in order to provide more benefits for the membership. The principal way in which contact is made with the membership is through the IAPS Bulletin. This is published three times a year under the editorship of Ricardo Garcia Mira (La Coruna). The Bulletin contains short articles about current issues in the EB field, research reports, descriptions of EB Research Units and Laboratories around the world and their current research programmes and activities, conference reports, details about forthcoming conferences, book reviews, lists of recently published papers in EB and other journals. Following the biennial conference the proceedings are published by the organisation responsible for organising the IAPS conference. The Bulletin is currently edited by Ricardo Garcia Mira. Visit the Members' section to download current and past numbers.

ArchNet A new Online Journal

Ashraf Salama (Professor of Architecture at Quatar University)
Chief Editor, Archnet-IJAR, is happy to announce the launch of:

Archnet- International Journal of Architectural research, an Electronic Academic Peer Reviewed Journal (Architecture, Planning and Environmental Studies), published 3 times per year.

As an integrated effort of ArchNet online community, we are pleased to announce a call for contributions for the INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL of ARCHITECTURAL RESEARCH ; an electronic, academic, peer-reviewed journal.

ArchNet-IJAR is an interdisciplinary scholarly online publication of architecture, planning, and built environment studies. The journal aims at establishing a bridge between theory and practice in the fields of architectural and design research, and urban planning and built environment studies. It reports on the latest research findings innovative approaches for creating responsive environments, with special focus on developing countries. Two international boards (advisory and editorial) ensure the quality of scholarly papers and allow for a comprehensive academic review of contributions spanning a wide spectrum of issues, methods, theoretical approach and architectural and development practices.

Interested academics, researchers, practitioners, and graduate students of architecture can contact Prof. Ashraf Salama, Chief Editor, at ijar@mit.edu.

Architectural Psychology:
School, University and Office Buildings
of the Future

With an introduction by Prof. Dr. W. F. E. Preiser, Cincinnati, Ohio

Download here the order form (and read more about the book!)

People generally like to have "control" over their environments. This need is expressed
through personal design of architecture and personal regulation of external stress factors.
For this reason, the concept of control over the environment has been applied as a central
criterion for three case studies of all grade school (Waldorf School, Cologne), university
(University of Koblenz) and office (Post Tower, Bonn) buildings. Firstly, a monograph
of psychological studies of innovative buildings modeled after the International Performance
Evaluation has been described in German. The "Koblenz Architecture Questionnaire"
is used as an instrument for evaluating the three structural environments examined
in this study.

Designing for Designers: Lessons Learned from Schools of Architecture

Jack l. nasar The Ohio State University, Wolfgang F.E. Preiser University of Cincinnati, Thomas Fisher University of Minnesota

" Designing for Designers uses the approach of the seminal work The Image of the City by Kevin Lynch, which showed the importance of talking to people and gauging their shared mental images of places.
That work transformed the way many design professionals and social scientists dealt with form. It complemented the “art” approach to design, in which the designer’s ego trumps functionality, with a social science approach that tried to gauge user reactions. This book brings attention to using the same approach for interiors and to do so for school buildings. The book discusses the findings for seventeen schools of design...."

IAPS 18:

CR-ROM, Proceedings

Designing Social Innovation. Planning, Building, Evaluating. Martens, B. / Keul, A. G. (Ed.).
It is now available at:
http://www.hhpub.com/books/isbn/0-88937-291-8.html

The design and functioning of urban environments is difficult and complex, and because of the competitive nature of urban planning today, it often does not have the input required from a variety of disciplines, ranging from psychologists and sociologists to architects and planners. Researchers from these areas are, however, uniquely placed to monitor success and advise on what works. This interdisciplinary volume does exactly that, with contributions by experts from around the world. Based on the best applied research presented at the 18th meeting of the International Association of People-Environment Studies, IAPS18, held in Vienna, this volume concentrates on theories and methods in planning and monitoring, environmental, health, and social impact assessment, post-occupancy evaluations (POEs), computer modelling, and various simulation tools. It is thus a fascinating and up-to-date review for researchers, professional practitioners, and policy makers.

The CD-ROM contains descriptions of all 382 contributions to this major Conference in Vienna (from Symposia, Paper Sessions, Workshops and Poster Sessions). It also contains about 2,400 Abstracts from all the previous IAPS Conferences from 1969-2002 which can be accessed using the full text search function - a unique database for an interdisciplinary approach.

Networks Meetings
Proceedings of Network Meetings and seminars are also occasionally published. For example, the Culture and Space in the Built Environment Network published the proceedings of its successful 1997 conference (Culture & Space in Home Environment edited by: Mete Ünügür, Orhan Hacihasanoglu, Hülya Turgut).

Directories
The second edition of the Membership Directory was published in 1999 and it is intended to publish the third edition in 2001. This lists all the members of IAPS who have agreed to have their names included, along with their contact address, fax/email as well as details about the academic discipline in which they are working, their research and professional interests and finally their current research projects and activities. This is an invaluable resource and enables members to identify and contact other colleagues working in similar areas to themselves but in another country or from within a different discipline.

HOUSING, SPACE AND QUALITY OF LIFE (Ricardo García-Mira, David Uzzell, J.Eulogio Real & José Romay, Editors) has just been published by Ashgate Publishing (www.ashgate.com).

Houses, and other spaces and environments in which people spend their time, have a crucial impact on quality of life. We are increasingly living in multi-cultural cities and communities, and this too significantly affects how we feel about spaces in which we live. This volume brings together psychologists, architects, designers and planners to discuss issues of housing, space, sustainability and multi-culturalism. In doing so, the book provides an insightful critical analysis of space, place and the quality of life. It also addresses the implications of intercultural tension on quality of life and on the way in which people use and interact in a multi-cultural space.

With case studies from Spain, Turkey, Brazil, the UK, the USA and Israel, it discusses issues such as low-cost housing, security, environmental conservation and sustainability, alternative building techniques, cultural diversity and its impact on housing and urban design.
