Some general information

IAPS holds a major conference every two years. These conferences have until now been held in Europe and Western Asia.

IAPS is very keen to support conferences which are compatible with the objectives of the Association and in which our members will have an interest and may indeed be attending and speaking. For example, a way to support related conferences is to offer to organise a paper session. By these means the IAPS Board will put together a themed symposium, including supplying the speakers. We believe this is an excellent way of encouraging collaboration between organisations, and for this reason we will always try to look favourably on any request by another organisation to organise such a session at one of the IAPS conferences.

The Networks too organise symposia and conferences.

IAPS is very keen to have links with sister organisations, and we are constantly looking for ways in which these relationships can benefit the membership. For example, it has been agreed that members of EDRA, MERA and PAPER will get reduced rate registration fees for IAPS Conferences. This is in turn reciprocated so that if an IAPS member attends an EDRA Conference they pay the same fee as an EDRA member. Membership of IAPS also enables reduced subscription rates to the journal Environment and Behavior.

Housing and Sustainability, University of York 11-13 April

The conference is co-sponsored by the National House-building Council Foundation. The organisers are: Steve Wilcox of Centre for Housing Policy, University of York (stevewpwilcox@aol.com) and Madhu Satsangi (m.satsangi@sbe.hw.ac.uk), Heriot-Watt University.

Abstracts for workshop papers are welcome and should be sent by email to Madhu Satsangi by 31 January, 2007.

Over the past decade, the research and policy profile of housing sustainability has grown significantly. Yet even the most cursory research shows that meanings of sustainability are myriad and contested and truly integrative perspectives rare. The conference aims to provide a forum for research that deepens understanding of individual dimensions of housing and sustainability – economic, social and environmental – and for research that looks at how conflicting sustainability agendas could be reconciled. The conference will include high profile plenary speakers and interactive workshops.

Speakers confirmed to date include Professor Mark Shucksmith (University of Newcastle upon Tyne), Professor Colin Jones (Heriot-Watt University) and Dr Oliver Hartwich (the Policy Exchange). There will also be presentations outlining the results of new research on sustainability issues that has been supported by the National House-Building Council Foundation.

http://konferencje.polsl.pl/iaps/default.aspx
AN INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC SYMPOSIUM HOUSING AND ENVIRONMENTAL
CONDITIONS IN POST-COMMUNIST COUNTRIES

Housing and environmental conditions in post-communist countries have
changed since 1989. It is interesting to observe these transformations,
compare and synthesize them, and look for positive solutions that will
improve and guarantee future living conditions. During this symposium
many subjects will be discussed, but the main aim will be to consider
the following topics :

- innovative residential architecture in post-communist countries
- post-communist large-scale housing areas – architectural, cultural,
economic, social and urban problems
- analysis of post-communist cities (such as Tychy and Nowa Huta, in Poland)
- valuing and regeneration of existing post-communist residential areas
- dealing with standardization by introducing functional, cultural,
economic and spatial
diversity
- positive and negative impacts of property tenure changes
- creating new identities and social representations for residents
- introducing ecological and energy-saving technologies
- accommodating new consumer lifestyles
- ageing people and buildings
- safety and security in residential areas
- financial, construction, social and architectural problems of
management and maintenance
- conservation of communist and post-communist large-scale housing estates.

Geographies of practice and the urban outdoors
Association of American Geographers Annual Meeting, 17-21 April 2007, San Francisco, California.

CALL FOR PAPERS
Session organisers:
Russell Hitchings, Department of Geography, University of Hull, UK
Rosie Day, Department of Urban Studies, University of Glasgow, UK

This session will explore the diverse transactional relationships that
inhabitants, workers and visitors have with the urban outdoors. Through a
particular interest in the mundane practices of different social groups, we
are also interested to consider how such a perspective might enrich or
challenge current efforts to increase overall wellbeing through outdoor
spaces.

Large amounts of resources are spent in cities across the world in
endeavouring to provide a positive outdoor environment; policy makers are
often keen to encourage city people outdoors where they are understood to
derive benefits in terms of improved physical and mental health and a
strengthened sense of community. Yet provided spaces, where they exist, may
be under-used, or used in ways not intended, whilst other, incidental
places can prove more popular. Many may lack the means to get to allocated
sites, even locally, whilst others derive similar benefits in more removed
locations. Conflicts can also arise when the practices of some may exclude
or preclude those of others. Furthermore, professional and policy practices
are also crucial as they configure the outdoors in ways that possibly seek
to manage and control different social practices. If we move beyond notions
of discrete spaces, there are issues of lifestyle as changing work
practices, for example, can keep individuals indoors where they may
actually be happier. Individuals and groups also manage their own outdoor
experience in ways that minimise the negative by avoiding unpleasant places
and controlling their sensory experience through clothing and other
technologies.

An examination of practice and the urban outdoors has the potential to
enrich our understanding of a number of important issues including
environmental justice, social inclusion, city sustainability and urban
design. More conceptually, it could extend theories of nature experience,
everyday materiality, and physical embodiment and also provide an important
geographical perspective by considering how outdoor practices can vary
between cities.

Possible themes:
. Social cohorts: the old, the young, the rich, the poor, the infirm.
· Different lifestyles: those always indoors, those always outside.
· Communities of practice: cyclists, businessmen, dog walkers,
drivers.
· The experience of environmental processes: weather, sunshine, snow,
wind.
· City climates: tropical, temperate, seasonal, stable.
· Professional practices that configure and control.
· Exclusionary practices and excluded practices.

Abstracts (250 words max) should be submitted to r.day@socsci.gla.ac.uk by
Friday 22nd September 2006. You should also consult the AAG website

Conference ‘Great Places, Great Cities’
Public spaces are vital parts of every community. Creating great public spaces that benefit our cities and foster security, lively-hood and a sense of belonging is the challenge faced by civic leaders everywhere.

This conference brings together leading experts from around the world who are challenging the current paradigm in city planning in order to create better places for people both now and in the future.

For 2 days of interactive sessions, participants can learn how to effect change through ‘placemaking’, discuss approaches with leading experts who are pushing the boundaries in urban design, transportation, community development and city renewal and hear real-life stories and experiences from change leaders in the field.

The conference will take place in Krakow (Poland), a historical European city that contains a wealth of great public spaces serving a variety of communities.

IAPS 18 in Vienna

This year the Vienna University of Technology hosted IAPS 18, the eighteenth Conference of the International Association for People-Environment Studies from 7-10 July 2004. Almost 400 delegates from 52 countries presented a total of 387 contributions to this largest European showcase for Environment & Behavior Research. IAPS 18 comprised 23 Symposia of 144 Papers, 34 Paper Sessions on 174 Papers, 3 Workshops, 10 Network Meetings, a Poster Session with 45 contributions and a Young Researchers' Workshop with 24 contributions. Central thematic blocks included Participation, Tourism, Environmental Protection, Health, Safety, Special User Groups, Gender, Creative Environments and Environment Simulation.
IAPS 18 was held under the slogan "Evaluation in Progress" and concentrated in particular on the new EU member states. The Congress kicked off with a Europe-related keynote session with Dr. Josef Hochgerner (Sociologist, ZSI), Dr. Wolfgang Petritsch (High Representative in Bosnia) and Viennese Green Party politician Mag. Christoph Chorherr. Speakers from Poland, Hungary, Slovenia, Romania and Slovakia organized an IAPS Forum East. One of the excursions took delegates to nearby Bratislava in Slovakia where they visited not only the old city but also the concrete jungle of Petrzalka.
The IAPS 18 content was organized by Prof. Dr. Bob Martens, Vienna University of Technology, and Dr. Alexander Keul, University of Salzburg and Vienna University of Technology, and processed by a local incomer. There was also time during this major Congress for private discussions, catching up on old friends and making new acquaintances in the relaxed Viennese atmosphere so much loved by visitors to Vienna. The event attracted great media interest - ORF (the Austrian broadcasting company) presented a radio programme and two news articles were published through the Austrian Press Agency.
The initial outcome of the joint East-West work is an IAPS 18 CD with the Abstracts not only from all the 2004 papers but also the Abstracts from all the IAPS Conferences since 1969 (about 2,500 in all). They are stored in a database in the Slovenian SciX format which permits a full text search through the history of environmental psychology. The CD is available for 35 Euro from Österreichischer Kunst- und Kulturverlag (Freundgasse 11, A-1040 Wien) and can be ordered at: office@kunstundkulturverlag.at

The 2004 IAPS Research Award was conferred to:
MARIA JOHANSSON
[Lund Institute of Technology, Dept. of Environmental Psychology, Sweden]
"Local People's Motives for Biodiversity Conservation"
