People-environment studies. Some background

IAPS is the forum for scholars who have an interest in an interdisciplinary exchange and in the study of the transactions and interrelationships between people and their socio-physical surroundings (including built and natural environments) and the relation of this field to other social and biological sciences and to the environmental professions.


The scope of IAPS reflects the scientific and practical capabilities and aspirations in work concerning people in their environments. Areas of interest include:

Spatial cognition and wayfinding
Ecological aspects of human actions in places
Evaluation of buildings and natural landscapes
Design of, and experiences in, workplaces, schools, residences, public buildings and public spaces
Social use of space: crowding, privacy, territoriality, personal space
Leisure and tourism behavior in relation to their physical settings
Meaning of built environments
T heories of place, place attachment, and place identity
Resource crises and environmental research
Risks and hazards: their perception and management
Stresses related to work and residential settings *
